We have a continuing problem with the local sparrows that seem to have taken a liking to the air conditioning unit outside our kitchen door.

At first I thought they were trying to build a nest behind it and then I thought they were pecking at the insulation to use for a nest elsewhere. There is no evidence of either of these though so I am not sure why they are so interested in this box.

The evidence they leave of their presence on the paving below is what concerns us most. I don’t know what they are eating but their droppings stick like glue to the tiles below.

I have filled the gaps at the back of the unit with plastic netting to stop them getting behind where they could make a nest or peck at the insulation but that has not deterred them.

One of our neighbours told me that Carrefour sell plastic birds with wings that flap in the wind. He said that people he knew had used them to stop birds sitting on their window grills; dropping their faeces on the window ledges below.

Nothing ventured – nothing gained so I invested in three of these at 1 Euro apiece. Whether they work or not remains to be seen. I thing a plastic sparrow hawk or a kestrel would be more effective.

Still, as the title suggests, I pray that this solution will work!
